Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Amanda is able to use soothing, relaxing hypnotherapeutic techniques to reduce, manage and eliminate your physical and psychological effects of IBS.

Hypnotherapy offers proven, positive results for the treatment of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and has been used by leading gastroenterologists in many nations. It has been found to be the most effective treatment to relieve IBS and its symptoms, confirmed by a number of clinical trials and studies.

Study groups trialling hypnotherapy for IBS have reported impressive reductions in abdominal pain, and improvements in gut function ranging from moderate to significant, including for those who failed to respond to medical treatments. Long term improvements have been observed in most participants.

How hypnotherapy works

Hypnotherapy, a drug-free alternative therapy, is so successful in treating IBS because it enables you to manage your emotions and anxiety, easing pressure on the gut and enabling you to regain control of your body. Combined with visualisations and self-hypnosis audio files created by Amanda and personalised for your unique case and its symptoms, you have a continuing treatment at home that soothes the gut and promotes healing.

Hypnotherapy can directly access your subconscious and identify the original stress from events or situations that first created the anxiety impacting your natural gut function. It can reduce sensitivity to trigger situations, stimulate calmer thought processes and increase confidence and self belief – all of which promote healthy gut function. It has also been shown to lower heart and breathing rates, boost the immune system and reduce pain signals.

Hypnotherapy for IBS is a specialist area and the best results will be obtained from a hypnotherapist such as Amanda, specifically trained in gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS.

What is IBS?

Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects many people — approximately 5 - 12 percent of people in Western world — but little is known about it or how to treat it. It frequently fails to respond to conventional treatment and there is inconsistent success from patient to patient. These include pharmaceutical products and dietary regimes such as the FODMAP diet; but there is no known medical cure for IBS.

It can be a very confusing illness. The severity of the condition varies from person to person, and from time to time. It can affect your physical and psychological well-being – and both are equally important.

Although IBS is often seen as a minor complaint, it can be a serious and debilitating condition with symptoms such as diarrhoea, pain, flatulence, constipation and bloating; which can seriously affect your quality of life. It accounts for 10 percent of consultations with general practitioners and has a considerable economic impact through high health care costs, absenteeism and loss of productivity.

What causes IBS?

The key to understanding IBS is how much gut function is affected by depression, stress, anxiety and and emotional trauma. Unfortunately, the symptoms of IBS create more stress, which further disrupts gut function and so the vicious cycle continues.

What actually happens is that stress releases the hormone CRF which slows down the upper parts of the gut, while speeding up the bowel. It also lowers resistance to infection and increases gut sensitivity.

While stress is a known contributor, IBS and other Functional Gut Disorders that produce damaging symptoms often have no causes that contemporary medical practice can identify.

Some facts:

  • 1 in 5 Australians suffer from IBS
  • For every gastroenterologist in Australia there are 250,000 patients
  • 25,200 gastroenterology patients are IBS sufferers (that the gastroenterologist has limited treatment for)
  • 10 percent of children under 10 have IBS
  • 6 percent of teenagers have IBS
  • Hypnotherapy is up to 90 percent effective in the long-term management of IBS.
